Chicago got a valiant performance from pitcher Marty Arnold, but it wasn't enough to beat the San Diego Captains. San Diego won the game, 6-2. Arnold threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball for the losing team. Jack DeWitt notched his 19th save in 24 chances. The Captains have an impressive 87-54 record.
Dick Howard came through with a big-time hit for San Diego. The second baseman smacked a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 3-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Howard told the San Diego Herald.
