The Detroit Wolverines spoiled a good performance by Atlanta left fielder Ed Mika, bumping off Atlanta, 3-1, at Wolverine Field. Mika went 4-4 with a home run and 3 singles. Detroit reliever Ron Laws picked up the win, upping his record to 10-10. Alfredo Morales was saddled with the loss. The first-place Wolverines, at 90-55, now lead their division by 2½ games.
Mike Christoph helped out the Detroit cause in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run-scoring double. For the game, the right fielder went 3-4 with 2 triples and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"We busted our tails," said Atlanta manager Philipe Yazzie. "But we came up short."
