Jon Pierce, who is tied for 2nd in the ABL in strikeouts with 174, had a strong outing for the New York Empires against the Detroit Wolverines at Wolverine Field. The left-hander was a big part of his team's 3-1 win. Jack Pratt notched his 20th save in 26 chances. New York raised its record to 73-71 with the win.

New York went in front, 3-1, on Eddie Ellison's 12th home run of the season. The solo home run, which Ellison hit in the top of the eighth, left Detroit pitcher Darrell Klug visibly perturbed.

In postgame remarks, Ellison applauded his team's "toughness."
