Empires 3B Lintner 4-for-4 in Win
|
The New York Empires downed the Montreal Habitants, 7-2. The hitting star was third baseman Rick Lintner. Lintner went 4-4 with a home run, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for the Empires. Andy Humphrey, who finished 3rd in the ABL in saves with 18 in 1971, was the winning pitcher. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. The Habitants fall to 6-9 and continue to sputter in the early going.
In the top of the 6th, catcher Eddie Ellison gave New York the lead when he hit a 2-run single. The Empires had been trailing 2-1, but the two-out single off Montreal pitcher Bob Schar changed that -- and New York went on to win.
"I think we did a good job of looking for pitches we wanted to hit and put good swings on them," said New York skipper Jose Placeholder.
