The Denver Burros knocked off the St. Louis Explorers, 5-3, in National Baseball League action at Corps of Discovery Stadium. Denver pitcher and Reston, Virginia, native Willie Purter had an outstanding performance. The Burros saw their record improve to 89-58.

Denver used the timely hitting of David Smith to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Burros on top, 5-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

Purter called the win "a collective effort."
