The Baltimore Lords outlasted Don Bozza and the Chicago Hawks, 8-6. Bozza was impressive in the loss. The Chicago catcher went 2-3 with a home run, while adding 5 RBI and scoring once. Baltimore reliever Leon Fairley picked up the win to move to 1-0. Alfredo Alvarado suffered the loss. The first-place Lords have a one-game lead in their division.

Had Woodie Scheideler not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Scheideler hit a bases-clearing double. That made the score 7-6, in favor of the Lords.

"I like the roll we're on," said Baltimore manager Steve Read.
