Brooklyn got a terrific game from catcher Jimmy Mara. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to New York, 10-5. Mara was 4 for 5 with 4 singles. He drove in 2 runs. The winner was Sid Shafer in relief. His record improves to 5-7. Dick Conway took the loss. After today's action, New York sits at 73-78, while Brooklyn falls to 78-74.

New York needed the clutch hitting of Francisco Chavez to seal the deal. The first baseman swatted a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Knickerbockers on top, 5-4. For the game, Chavez had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"Winning is all that really matters and we got it done today," Chavez told the New York Chronicle.
