Explorers Suffer One-Run Loss at San Diego
|
In a low-scoring affair between the San Diego Captains and the St. Louis Explorers, pitcher Mark Pike was the difference between victory and defeat. The San Diego right-hander earned kudos in the 2-1 Captains win. In 7.2 innings, Pike surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 4. He allowed 1 run. The win puts San Diego at 87-68 this season.
Troy Stallings had a big solo home run for the Captains in the bottom of the third inning. With San Diego leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a slider from 30-year old right-handed pitcher Scot Benjamin and punished it. The result was his 15th home run of the season, which put the Captains on top, 2-0.
"Tough loss," said St. Louis manager Ray Fleetwood. "The kind that burns a little inside."
