Pittsburgh met Cleveland in a late-season showdown.
The Pittsburgh Industrials weathered a fine game by Cleveland first baseman Don Pelletier to upend the Bobcats, 5-3, at Allegheny Field. Pelletier slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Gordie Kleiss earned the save, his 6th in 7 tries.
Oakland, California-born Carlos Chavez came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded and the Industrials trailing 3-2, he hit a 2-run single to right to put Pittsburgh on top.
Chavez said his team "played with focus."
The Industrials improved to 89-71.
