Generals Sunk by Drillers

The Houston Drillers downed the Atlanta Generals, 5-1, at Sam Houston Field. Stellar pitching by Dave Van Loon had a lot to do with it. The right-hander handcuffed his opponent all game. Van Loon, now 3-6, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 5, walking 0, and allowing 1 run. The win lifted the Houston record to 83-77.
The Drillers got a big at-bat from catcher Charlie Fee. For the game, Fee was 1 for 2 with a double and a walk. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring double. His 10th double of the season gave Houston a 1-0 lead.
"This level of focus will win us a lot of ballgames," Van Loon said after the game.
