The St. Louis Explorers earned a close win over the San Diego Captains, thanks in part to Jorge Gonzalez. The St. Louis left-hander, who finished 5th in the NBL in ERA with 2.39 in 1974, played a key role in the 3-1 victory. The winner was Gonzalez. He threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. The loser was Ray McKenzie. The Captains fall to 7-12 and continue their rocky start to the 1976 season.
The Explorers got a big at-bat from second baseman Dave Bieler. For the game, Bieler went 1-3 with a double. He drove in 3 runs. In the bottom of the first, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 3rd double of the season gave St. Louis a 3-0 lead.
"Main thing is I want the team to win," Gonzalez told a reporter after the game. "Just have to go out there, take care of my job, and give my team a chance to win."
