Caldwell Homers Twice in 9-2 Empires Win
The New York Empires defeated the Toronto Hurons, 9-2, in part because of left fielder Jim Caldwell. Caldwell went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for the Empires. Andy Humphrey was the winner. He's now 2-1. The loser was 22-year old right-handed pitcher Bill John. After losing, Toronto is 7-12.

Paul Brower had a big run-scoring double for the Empires in the bottom of the second inning. With New York leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a splitter from fan favorite Bill John and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 6th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Empires ahead, 2-0.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Brower told the New York Herald.
