Pivotal Game 5 Goes to Host Captains, 4-3
|
The San Diego Captains nearly wasted a strong game from starter Ray Heath, but were saved by some timely hitting in a 10th inning walk-off win over the Pittsburgh Industrials today.
Heath pitched well in the 4-3 win at San Diego Sporting Complex. He threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball. The win allowed San Diego to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 League Championship Series.
Batting in the bottom of the tenth, 1967 Rookie of the Year Award winner Randy Barnes had a real shot to win the game. Pittsburgh pitcher Ray Williams was determined not to let it happen. But with one out, Barnes hit a run-scoring single. The Captains had a walk-off triumph.
"Our team showed some gumption," said Heath. "I like it."
Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at Allegheny Field in Pittsburgh.
