World Series Game 1 Victory for Combs and Pittsburgh
|
The stakes were high. Frank Combs was ready.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Allegheny Field, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Pittsburgh Industrials to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Combs held the Houston Drillers to 2 hits and no walks, while striking out 9. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Pittsburgh, which now leads 1-0.
Combs, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, was dealing all game. He kept Houston hitters off-balance, while giving the Industrials 9 quality innings. Combs threw 99 pitches, allowing 2 hits and striking out 9.
"Frank is tough to beat when he's hitting his spots," said Pittsburgh manager Vincent Wicker.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Allegheny Field in Pittsburgh.
