Detroit Wins at Home to Narrow Series Deficit to 3-2
|
Larry Black was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field.
The right-hander pitched the Detroit Wolverines to victory at Wolverine Field, staving off the Denver Burros, who remain one game away from a title. Black threw 8.1 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Wolverines to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Wolverines had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when center fielder Jerry Plumley hit a run-scoring triple. The triple came off Jeff Munoz and made the score 2-0, Wolverines. Plumley went 2-4 with a triple, while scoring 2 times.
Detroit manager Alex Wobbema commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday at Gates Crescent Park in Denver.
