Habitants Earn Late 3-2 Win
|
Montreal and New York left the crowd in suspense until the last at-bat.
The Montreal Habitants topped the New York Empires, 3-2, in 12 innings at LaSalle Stadium. The game was highlighted by the performance of Montreal pitcher Bob Schar. Al Johns claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 3 innings. His record stands at 2-0.
Batting in the bottom of the 12th, 30-year old center fielder Daniel Chavez had a real shot to win the game. New York pitcher Danilo Molina was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Chavez hit a run-scoring single. The Habitants had a walk-off triumph.
In postgame remarks, Chavez applauded his team's "resolve."
New York drops to 10-10.
