The Detroit Wolverines beat the New York Empires, 17-5, at Wolverine Field. Jerry Plumley, who is tied for 2nd in the ABL in runs scored with 18, starred for Detroit. He hit 2 home runs. He scored 4 runs and drove in 7. Scott Litwak, who finished 3rd in the ABL in wins with 18 in 1971, was the winning pitcher. With Detroit leading 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Plumley came up to bat against New York pitcher George Cox. Plumley hit a splitter to right for a grand slam home run. His 6th home run of the season put the Wolverines on top, 9-0.

"It was great to come out and swing the bats," Plumley told the Detroit Bulletin.
