Knickerbockers Upend Bluebirds, 5-2
|
Getting an impressive start from Dave Torre, New York beat Brooklyn by the score of 5-2. Torre, now 1-0, was the winner. In 7.2 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 3, walking 1, and allowing 2 runs. Jose Espinoza, who led the NBL in innings pitched with 263.1 in 1962, earned the save for New York.
Bob Underwood dealt the Bluebirds a blow in the top of the fifth. Batting with the bases loaded and New York leading 2-0, Underwood, who won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1970, hit a 1-0 fastball for a 2-run single.
New York manager Joaquin Placeholder called it "a darn good win."
New York goes to 2-1 with the win.
