The Detroit Wolverines topped the San Francisco Seagulls, 5-3, in American Baseball League action at Wolverine Field. The standout performance belonged to Detroit pitcher and León, Mexico, native Juan Rodriguez. In 8 innings, Rodriguez surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 5. He allowed 3 runs. The win brings the Wolverines to 14-9, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs.
Detroit third baseman Duane Simmons contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With two down, he hit a cutter into center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 21st hit of the season and put the Wolverines ahead, 4-3.
"We won," Simmons told assembled media after the game. "I guess that's all that really matters."
