Jon Pierce of the New York Empires was on top of his game.

The 25-year-old tantalized the Chicago Hawks with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.

"He had the changeup working," Chicago manager Mike Flaherty said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The New York hurler had 8 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Pierce told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Thus far this season, Pierce has tossed 45 innings in 6 starts, fanned 30 batters, walked 15 and put up a 2.80 ERA with 4 wins and 2 losses.
