Matz Takes Charge, Blanks San Francisco, 4-0
The San Francisco Seagulls manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Detroit Wolverines. The Seagulls were overpowered by Detroit starter William Matz, who hurled his club to victory, 4-0.

"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Al Borie said.

Over 9 innings, Matz blanked San Francisco on 4 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Matz said.

"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."

Up to now Matz has compiled an ERA of 2.72 with a 4-1 mark over 5 starts. He has 17 strikeouts in 36.1 innings and has held opponents to a .189 batting average.
