Spirited fans greeted the New York Empires for their clash with the Chicago Hawks.

Chicago beat New York on the strength of starting pitcher Johnny Russell's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 7-1. The victory makes Chicago 9-18.

Russell was in the zone, shutting down New York hitters over 7.2 innings. Russell, who threw 91 pitches, allowed 1 run on 2 hits. He also tallied 5 punchouts.

"Johnny is tough to beat when he's hitting his spots," said Chicago manager Mike Flaherty.
