Fans watched the Detroit Wolverines and the New York Empires fight to the finish.

New York wasted an exceptional performance by pitcher Dave Kretz, falling to the Detroit Wolverines, 4-3. Kretz threw 7.2 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. The loss puts New York at 14-16.

Detroit needed the clutch hitting of Steve Tingle to seal the deal. The second baseman swatted a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Wolverines on top, 4-3. For the game, Tingle had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," New York manager Dan Whiting said, following the tough loss.
