Quakers Rebuff Captains, 3-2
|
In a low-scoring contest between the Philadelphia Quakers and the San Diego Captains, Mel Hartman, who finished 3rd in the NBL in saves with 19 in 1962, proved to be the difference. The Philadelphia right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-2 Quakers win. Hartman picked up the win for Philadelphia, going 8 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 8-0. The Quakers have an impressive 22-12 record.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Quakers had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the sixth, when shortstop Gordy Ferris hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Gabe Magana and made the score 3-2, Quakers. Ferris went 2 for 4 with 2 singles.
San Diego manager Joe Mack said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
