The 1973 season did not get off to quite the start the Cleveland Bobcats had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Washington Eagles at Lakefront Stadium. The final score was 6-2. Starting Pitcher Tom McAteer was the top performer for Washington. The winner was McAteer. He threw 8.1 innings of 3-hit ball. The loser was Scott Dubyak.

Washington used a clutch at-bat from Mike Lockhart to capture the win. The right fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Eagles ahead, 3-1. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
