Captains Best Packers in Pitching Duel
|
San Diego Captains pitcher Ray Heath was in fine form, leading his team past the Cincinnati Packers, 2-1. In 6 innings, Heath surrendered 10 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 0. He allowed 1 run. Dave Fields, who finished 5th in the NBL in ERA with 2.70 in 1971, nailed down the save.
The Packers had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Captains going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the former first round draft pick Freddie Boone came to the plate. Boone hit a solo home run on a 1-0 fastball from Cincinnati hurler John Stoddard. It was Boone's 3rd home run of the year.
"It was a good effort all around," said Boone.
San Diego has now won 3 straight, while the Packers have lost 3 in a row.
