The Toronto Hurons managed to get by the New York Empires, 2-1, at Dominion Field. Toronto pitcher Larry Haines set himself apart with his performance. Haines got the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed 3 hits and walked 2 over 5.2 innings. Haines allowed no runs. Don LeoGrande nailed down his 2nd save.
The Hurons got an important contribution from center fielder Jorge Luna, who in the bottom of the third punched a 2-1 changeup into center for a run-scoring double. It was his 2nd double of the season and put the Hurons ahead, 2-0.
"This team is on a mission," said Haines, who is one of the clubhouse leaders. "I like our focus."
With the loss, New York sinks to 1-3.
