Bluebirds Edge Packers, 2-1
|
Damon Rutherford, who led the NBL in wins with 18 in 1968, never let the Packers get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his forkball, to pitch the Bluebirds to a win, 2-1. Rutherford got the win, improving to 3-5. He gave up 5 hits and walked 3 over 9 innings. He allowed 1 run. The Packers, at 16-25, have lost 6 in a row.
The Bluebirds got a big at-bat from catcher Ed Blain. For the game, Blain was 1-3 with a double, while adding 2 RBI. In the bottom of the second, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 1st double of the season gave Brooklyn a 2-0 lead.
"We found a way to win tonight," Rutherford said.
