Quakers Keep Streak Alive with Late Rally
|
The Philadelphia Quakers withstood an impressive performance by St. Louis third baseman Fernando Martinez to defeat the Explorers, 7-5, at Quakers Stadium. Martinez went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Darrell Klug, 3-0, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. Philadelphia has now won 5 straight.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Bob Boyd came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing St. Louis pitcher Bernie Tate, he hit a 0-2 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Philadelphia on top, 6-5.
"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Boyd.
