Knickerbockers Use Late Score to Top Captains, 7-6
|
Both teams had their chances, but the New York Knickerbockers eventually prevailed.
The San Diego Captains could not turn a fine performance from shortstop Jorge Escobeda into a win. Instead, the New York Knickerbockers prevailed, 7-6. Escobeda went 2 for 5 with 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Dave Torre, 4-0, earned the win in relief. He allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 3.1 innings. Wayne Houston closed the game out for New York, earning his 11th save.
Jeff Madsen, who is a four-time All-Star, helped out the New York cause in the bottom of the eighth inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the pinch hitter was 1-1.
"It wasn't our best performance," said Madsen, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
The win gives New York a season record of 33-32.
