San Diego Stopped, 7-1, by New York
|
Dave Torre, who finished 5th in the NBL in ERA with 2.19 in 1968, had a strong outing for the New York Knickerbockers against the San Diego Captains at Knickerbocker Stadium. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 7-1 win. Torre yielded no runs over 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. His record improves to 7-4. New York now sits at 39-29, while San Diego falls to 46-25.
Ron Freeman had a big 3-run home run for the Knickerbockers in the bottom of the fifth inning. With New York leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a fastball from 29-year old left-handed pitcher Dave Fields and punished it. The result was his 8th home run of the season, which put the Knickerbockers on top, 5-0.
"I like the vibe in the clubhouse after a win," said Freeman. "It sure beats the alternative."
