Captains Upend Explorers, 4-1
|
San Diego and St. Louis duked it out and the Captains came out victorious.
San Diego Captains pitcher Ray Heath was in top form, leading his team past the St. Louis Explorers, 4-1. Heath, who finished 5th in the NBL in wins with 17 in 1969, went the distance for San Diego. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits.
San Diego used a clutch at-bat from Ron Byrd to capture the win. The center fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Captains ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"It's a mindset," said Heath. "Just trying to do your job, trying to be consistent."
With the victory, the Captains upped their record to 41-28.
