Chicago Blanks San Diego, Birch Winner
Friday, July 5th , 1974
Chicago Traders starter Randy Birch really did a number on the San Diego Captains, shutting them out, 2-0, on 3 hits in a complete game victory. He issued 1 walk and had 3 strikeouts.
"We didn't have good at-bats," said San Diego manager Joe Mack. "I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting and seeing as our team has a bunch of good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Birch."
This year, Birch has a 6-6 mark in 16 starts with a 4.04 ERA. He has given up 82 hits in 91.1 innings, struck out 47 and issued 44 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .244 batting average against him.
