The 1970 Major League Baseball amateur draft will be conducted today. The cream of the crop in amateur baseball circles will be plucked by the baseball hierarchy. Diamond journalists and experts say these ten names are at the top of the first-year player shopping list:
1. Mario Alva, 19 year-old SS out of college. 2. Bruce Shurtleff, 18 year-old LHP out of high-school. 3. Bob Trout, 21 year-old RHP out of college. 4. Bob Chilcote, 20 year-old LF out of college. 5. Bob Roberts, 18 year-old LF out of high-school. 6. Scott Stevens, 18 year-old C out of high-school. 7. Mark St. Jean, 18 year-old CF out of high-school. 8. Dan Turner, 22 year-old RHP out of college. 9. Lenny Griffin, 18 year-old 1B out of high-school. 10. Stu Benson, 18 year-old CF out of high-school.
Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Twin Cities and Cleveland have the top five picks and hope to cash in this year.
