Arkle Laces 3 HR Against Kansas City
Sunday, July 15th , 1973
It's a rare event when a player hits three homers in a game and rarer still when he does it and loses.
It happened at Independence Field, as Champ Arkle of the Milwaukee Dairymen unloaded three times against the Kansas City Bulls but was still bumped off, 6-4, by the Bulls.
"We were lucky to win today," said Kansas City skipper DD Martin. "You can't give up that many home runs and expect to win on a regular basis."
For the game, the Milwaukee third baseman had 4 hits in 5 at-bats, scored 3 times, and drove in 4.
Arkle spoke to the writers in the postgame press room with mixed feelings, saying he was sad to lose but happy to be seeing the ball well.
"I was just trying to swing early and often to give myself a chance," he said. "I let the pitcher supply all the power and try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."
Champ Arkle singled in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Bob Crosby in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Dusty Solomon in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off Dusty Solomon in the 9th.
This year, Arkle has collected a .255 batting average to date with 74 hits in 290 at-bats, 48 RBIs, 15 home runs and scored 37 times. He has played in 80 games.
