Matz Leads Detroit to 2-0 Win Over Seattle Sunday, September 15th , 1974 William Matz kept the Seattle Emeralds hitters from doing much damage at Wolverine Field. Seattle could only muster 5 hits and draw 1 walk against the left-handed Matz, who controlled them throughout the game. Detroit won the contest, 2-0. Matz added 8 strikeouts in his complete-game effort. "I don't know if I was on or if they were off today," Matz told reporters after the shutout win. "But whatever it was, I hope it happens again next time." Matz has gone 16-12 this season with an ERA of 2.81 and 131 strikeouts in 214.2 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .236 against him.
