Great Day for Wilkins -- 5 Hits
Saturday, April 8th , 1972
Today at San Diego Sporting Complex, Ernie Wilkins put on an impressive display.

The San Diego Captains shortstop tagged Los Angeles pitching for 5 hits in 6 at-bats, but his teammates were unable to capitalize on the spree and lost the game to the Los Angeles Blockbusters by the score of 8-7.

"The loss takes some of the joy out of it, but I'll take it," Wilkins said. "5-for-6 ain't bad in any league."

Despite the terrific performance, the Captains manager was unwilling to offer the shortstop much praise, saying the "whole roster" is held accountable for losses.

"Ernie told me 'Coach, I had 5 hits' and I said 'Well that's great, but it looks like we needed one more from you,'" manager Joe Mack said.

Ernie Wilkins singled in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, tripled in the 7th, singled in the 9th and singled in the 10th.

This year, Wilkins has collected a .429 batting average to date with 9 hits in 21 at-bats, 1 RBIs, 1 home run and scored 6 times. He has played in 5 games.
