Tom Smith of the San Diego isn't just a strong veteran presence in Western Baseball League. He's also one of the league's top players.

At the age of 35, the second baseman has been named the recipient of the Western Baseball League Most Valuable Player Award for 1962.

"At my age you sometimes think of possibly retiring, I'm sure glad I didn't," he said.


On the season, the North Vacherie, Louisiana native hit .307 and got on base at a .423 clip. He hit 11 home runs as well as 52 RBI and 76 runs scored.

He received 3 first place votes out of a possible 8. Marv Haynes of the Honolulu Kings finished second in voting with 2 first place votes, while Tom McNeese of the San Diego Friars finished third with 2 first place votes.
