Super Season, Cook Wins Most Valuable Player Award
Thursday, September 6th , 1962
At the age of 24, Mike Cook of the Austin Senators could very well have his best years ahead of him.
It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 1962 was good enough to win the center fielder the Lone Star Baseball League Most Valuable Player Award.
"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach."
The top hitter put up a .297 batting average this year, as well as a .383 on-base percentage. He played 120 games and racked up 140 hits, 15 doubles, 4 triples, 11 home runs, 47 RBIs and 72 runs scored.
He received 3 first place votes out of a possible 6. Clyde Barry of the Tulsa Boomers finished second in voting with 2 first place votes, while Ken Bava of the San Antonio Defenders finished third with 1 first place vote.
