The instability of the early National League arguably led to innovation in uniform design. The Indianapolis Independents lasted only two seasons and the Milwaukee Grays lasted just one, but in 1878 these new entries became the first to clothe themselves in uniforms of a color other than white. Indianapolis opted for a sky blue while the Grays, naturally, chose gray.
