A new innovation—home and road uniforms—made its debut this season. Three clubs—Baltimore, Brooklyn, and Pittsburgh—all adopted the practice at some point during the season (there is wide disagreement about who was first), and all three wore white while at home and gray while on the road. Baltimore wore the same cap with both uniforms, but the Bluebirds and Industrials extended the color coordination to their headgear. In the ensuing decades some teams would experiment with non-white home uniforms and/or non-gray road uniforms, but the prevailing tradition of white for home and gray for away was set by the very first dual-uniform sets in 1901.
This was also the first season the Lords’ uniforms would feature the distinct deep red that would become their trademark. |
