Pivotal Game 5 Goes to
Host Quakers, 4-3 |
The Philadelphia
Quakers moved to within one game of the World
Series today, downing the visiting Chicago
Traders at Penn's Landing Park by a score of
4-3. Quakers right-hander Jimmy
Smith was named player of the game after a
strong outing in which he threw 6 innings of 5-hit
ball. The win gives the Quakers a 3-2 advantage in
the best-of-7 League Championship Series.
In the bottom of the fifth, Philadelphia third
baseman Alan
Weston had a productive at-bat. With the bases
loaded and no one out, Weston stroked a 2-run single
to left. It made the score 4-0, Philadelphia. For
the game, he was 1 for 3 with a walk. He drove in 2
runs.
Traders manager Winston Tinker did not take
questions after the game, telling assembled
reporters that he would hold a press conference "if
and when we win the World Series."
Game 6 is set to be played Tuesday, October 9th,
1951 at Union Field. The scheduled starters for the
game are Jackie
Gregory for the Philadelphia Quakers and Ken
Amison for the the Chicago Traders.
