Gillespie, Detroit Start League Championship Series Strong with Home Win
The Detroit Wolverines started the League Championship Series in style today, downing the visiting Buffalo Beavers at Wolverine Field by a score of 4-3 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Wolverines right-hander Clay Gillespie was named player of the game after he threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball.

Had Lenny Volner not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Volner hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Wolverines.

"Feels good to get the job done," Gillespie said after the game.

Game 2 is set to be played tomorrow at Wolverine Field. The scheduled starters for the game are Aart MacDonald for Buffalo and Ray Barker for Detroit.
