Host Wolverines Drop Pivotal Game 5, Now Trail Series 3-2
In a pivotal Game 5, the New York Knickerbockers were hoping for a big game from starter Rick Sumner. They got one.

The right-hander shut out the Detroit Wolverines, proving to be the difference-maker as he led his club to a 2-0 victory. The Knickerbockers took the 2-0 win over the Detroit Wolverines to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series.

Bob Jones, the 1953 Most Valuable Player Award winner , had a direct impact on the outcome. Jones contributed a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to put New York up, 2-0.

"Every team in baseball loses," Wolverines manager Ben Heuring said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."

The next game is set to be played Tuesday at Knickerbocker Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Clay Gillespie for the Detroit Wolverines and Doug Leonard for the the New York Knickerbockers.
