Hawks Hammered by Volner, Drop Game 4 to Wolverines
On the verge of being swept and facing a red-hot Chicago Hawks team, the Detroit Wolverines had a tough assignment. Lenny Volner delivered.

The Wolverines shortstop was unstoppable for the visitors, as he went 2-3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 in guiding his club to its first victory of the series, 9-6. Volner, 28, earned accolades for his efforts. The win means Detroit now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.

Had Gary Mitchell not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Mitchell hit a 3-run home run. That made the score 8-6, in favor of the Wolverines.

"Winning the game is always the first objective," Volner said.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hyde Park Stadium. Slated to start are Tommy Johnson for Detroit and Jose Saucedo for Chicago.
