Cleveland shortstop Harold Batkin pounded Cincinnati Packers pitchers at Lakefront Stadium, but it was not enough to keep the Bobcats from falling, 8-7 in Game 1 of the League Championship Series. Batkin went 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. He scored 3 times and drove in 2, though he couldn't keep the Bobcats from slipping to a 1-0 deficit in the best-of-7 series.

Hershell Smith, the 31-year old center fielder , had a direct impact on the outcome. Smith contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the second inning to put Cincinnati up, 2-1.

"We had the game right there for the taking," said Cleveland manager Daniel Mays. "But we decided not to take it."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Lakefront Stadium in Cleveland.
