Explorers Lose, 5-2, at Gates Crescent Park
The Denver Burros topped the St. Louis Explorers, 5-2, in National Baseball League action at Gates Crescent Park. The standout performance belonged to Denver pitcher and New Haven, Connecticut, native Frank Combs. Combs, the winner, moves to 8-4. He threw 6 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up no walks. Dan Valenti was called on to finish, recording his 2nd save.

Chuck Carr dealt the Explorers a blow in the bottom of the fifth. Batting with the bases loaded and Denver leading 1-0, Carr, who won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1974, hit a 0-1 sinker for a run-scoring single.

"We're playing like we're capable of," said Denver manager Clark Anderson.

The first-place Burros have won 5 in a row.
