Eagles Suffer 8-4 Home Defeat
|
Though he had a terrific game, Gary Long could not prevent his team, the Washington Eagles, from absorbing a loss. New York won the game, 8-4. Long was 3-3 with 3 singles and a walk. Ray Schifsky, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1966 draft, was the winning pitcher. Over 8 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. The Knickerbockers bumped their record to 46-45 with this latest triumph.
New York used the timely hitting of Steve Wright to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Knickerbockers on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
In postgame comments to the New York Chronicle, Wright said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
