The San Diego Captains received a sterling performance from starting pitcher Earl Beerbower, allowing them to shoot down the St. Louis Explorers, 3-1. Beerbower, the winner, moves to 3-1. He threw 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 5 walks. Picking up his 16th save was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Brian Meade.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Captains had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when third baseman Reynaldo Bernal hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Tommie Jones and made the score 2-0, Captains. Bernal was 2 for 4 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs.
"Our offense was purring," said San Diego manager Joe Mack. "Like a well-oiled machine."
Today's win puts San Diego at 76-80, while St. Louis falls to 75-80.
