Captains Take Tight Tilt, 2-1

San Diego Captains pitcher Ed Payne was in fine form, leading his team past the St. Louis Explorers, 2-1. Brian Meade closed it out for his 4th save. The Captains raised their record to 19-22.
Had Kent Schiffer not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Schiffer hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Captains.
"Tough loss," said St. Louis manager Ray Fleetwood. "But we'll learn from it."
